More Math

Dermot: Mama, what's 100 plus 1 plus 1 plus 3?
Mama: 105
Dermot: So if I had 2 instead of 3 I would have 104.
Mama: Yep

Wow. Ethan also told me that one of the kindergarten teachers at Dermot's daycare saw what Dermot was working on and told him that he looks like he may be ready for kindergarten. I'm in no rush, but no kidding. They have no idea what this kid can do. They look at him with the same eyes they look at every kid. They look for typical, not strengths, talents, and gifts. Sigh. I hope public school is better, but I fear that it may not be. I feel like I may be doing a lot of advocating for Dermot in the future.

That's great! What are your school choices?

He's going to the local public school at the end of our block. I don't see the need to pay for the fancy education around here. Our school system is a good one. They just better get used to me hounding them. My parents didn't advocate for me and I was bored out of my mind. The few times I did advocate for myself, I made progress. Gifted kids are special needs and they fall under ADA. No one mentions that. They're too busy with all of the ADHD kids and LD kids, but I will be a bug in their ear.

I just did some digging around. Giftedness isn't covered by ADA. When I was in school there was a law - maybe it was state or local. Now there is no protection for gifted kids. Sigh. No wonder so many teachers who specialized in gifted education have lost their jobs.

He's one smart cookie.
I've been wondering about gifted programs nowadays too. Gah.
Course with the Philly school district the way it is we will most likely be paying to send Noah to school - so we best be happy with his education.
